Amnesia Collection is a horror adventure game and is available this month on PS NOW. Amnesia somewhat spawned this genre of walking simulators or horror walking simulators. Amnesia Collection is all about being in the darkness, being scared and not losing your sanity. Amnesia Collection bundles all 3 games and it is recommended that you start with the first one which is Amnesia Dark Descent because the other games are definitely harder and if you want to follow the logical path, you’re going to play Amnesia Dark Descent, then you play the DLC called Justine and then Amnesia A Machine for Pigs.
A Machine for Pigs has more of a steampunk era and is set probably about 100 years ago where Dark Descent is almost 200 years ago and you can feel the difference. Dark Descent is very interesting because it kind of tailors to how you play and there’s an interesting thing that goes on in the game where if you spend too much time in the dark you start to get scared. When you get scared you start to have these hallucinations where you hear things and when they get stronger, they can eventually interact with you and hurt you.
Afterward you’re worried about your sanity indicator and you’re also worried about your overall health. There are a couple of things in this mansion that you can do to heal yourself and sometimes you just have to sit in the light and kind of calm down. After being in the dark for too long your character can collapse on the ground because he’s just freaking out and then after a while, you will get back up.
The light is so precious in the Amnesia Collection as you have a lantern in the game but you’re limited on oil and then you’re constantly looking throughout each room for tinderboxes or matches so you can light your candles or your lantern. The location is really cool because this is an old 18th-century castle but it also has all these newer things like elevators, different devices and machinery.
It all follows the story of this really weird occult stuff and I don’t want to give away any spoilers because it’s all about reading the different clues and it’s all about stumbling through these games and remembering what’s going on. This location lends itself to a lot of these jump scares as there’s a prison block, there’s a library, some old cellars and more. There is an experience when you’re treading through the water and I actually got several jump scares which I was kind of expecting but they innovated several of them.
The creatures that you encounter and just the fear of them while trying to get to a certain point without getting caught or attacked feel exhilarating but satisfying. If you’re not in a good state of mind sometimes the only answer is just to run through everything to get to the next door or area and just hope for the best. Some negatives are that there is this old-school video game thing where it won’t exactly tell you what you’re doing with all your items. It will just present an issue to you and if you weren’t thorough or read a certain note that tells you, you can combine certain items you feel a bit lost.
There’s that minor annoyance there but at the same time, that’s the difficulty of these games as I would find myself in these spots where I didn’t know what to do and I wasn’t sure but I knew this must be the way to proceed and it made me think outside the box and combine things and do other things that I wouldn’t have thought of. I don’t like it but it is just a video game mechanic and truthfully everything that you need to collect is actually highlighted but everything is very dark and you might miss something.
Overall, I liked Amnesia Collection as it bundles 3 games in one, I really liked the way it looked even though it was kind of an older game and I really like how the gameplay stays true to the original game. The horror aspect made me jump out of my seat and just the darkness of this game and the lore of it all is incredible. I would highly recommend Amnesia Collection to anyone who enjoys horror games or is looking for a game that gets the heart racing.
Amnesia Collection has been permanently added to the PS NOW service.
Amnesia Collection bundles 3 great horror games into 1 package. It has some awesome gameplay mechanics, chilling jump scares and a strong story to explore that can only be hindered by its own difficulty and darkness.
