Astro’s Playroom is a platforming game where you are inside the PS5. It is preinstalled on the console and it is truly a fantastic trip down memory lane and it checks every box. Fantastic graphics, fantastic gameplay, audio design is amazing, the soundtrack is a banger, integration of the DualSense 5 is literally second to none and the whole point of this game is to showcase the features of the DualSense 5.
The intro shows all previous generation of consoles and it was a trip down nostalgia lane but it was time for me to grab a grip of the DualSense 5 and boy was I blown away by it. How the demo showcases the controller is amazing with triggers that virtually get stiffer or lighter in your fingertips, vibration that feels unique, the touch pad you can draw on with much more precision and a microphone built into the controller where you can get your character to gracefully move across the screen.
By the end of this demo, I was blown away by how well it was executed. Once you compete the demo, you’re launched into CPU Plaza which is the central hub for the four game worlds within Astro’s Playroom. You’re actually inside your PS5 so each world is a component that you have to visit and complete. You have the Memory Meadow, SSD Speedway, Cooling Springs and GPU Jungle. Much like the lightning fast solid state drive there’s a lot of high-speed action inside of the SSD Speedway area.
My personal favorite GPU Jungle is where Astro’s Playroom has the best soundtrack. If you look around the world there are so many PlayStation Easter eggs even the texturing that you are walking on has little Cross buttons all over it. If you are allergic to triangles, crosses, squares and circles you should probably not play Astro’s Playroom. As somebody that grew up with PlayStation 1 and had all the concurrent consoles after that including the handhelds, this game is absolutely amazing.
PlayStation Labo is the collectible display area of the game and you can collect what’s called artifacts and all these artifacts are indeed collectible PlayStation products, so either the consoles themselves or accessories. The detail in these 3D models of previous consoles is absolutely insane and it’s almost like I’m looking at my old console which is amazing. On the wall there’s a bunch of puzzle pieces so if you are trying to 100 percent this game you are going to have a fully decorated wall with classic PlayStation artwork. There’s also a D-pad on the roof and if you just look around, you’re going to see so many easter eggs.
The entire world of Astro’s playroom is so creative as each level is so unique in design and just going around the central hub area when you’re out of game, kind of the social lobby has so many awesome little PlayStation easter eggs that it made my head spin. But Astro’s Playroom would be kind of pointless if the gameplay wasn’t fun and actually it was a lot of fun. Astro’s Playroom will find you tilting your controller, rubbing the touch pad, blowing into the microphone and wondering how triggers and vibration like this did not exist up until now, it is truly a game changer.
Stepping in the sand gives you a gentle crunch. In the water I had to put down my controller and wipe my hands off because it was that realistic. I hope you’ve been working out your fingers because these triggers are stiff. Astro’s Playroom is graphically beautiful and when you’re gaming prepare to be amazed by the 4K detail of the PlayStation 5. I had so much satisfaction gently sliding my fingers up the touch pad and feeling the haptic feedback that felt like a zipper in my hands.
Feeling the drip drop of rain droplets on the top of my head but really, it’s in my hands caused such a unique sensation that I haven’t experienced elsewhere. As there wasn’t a whole lot of PlayStation 5 games at launch this game is actually included and pre-installed on the PS5. This game absolutely showcases all the new features on the hardware, the software and also the controller itself. There is one section of the game where you tilt the controller back and forth while shifting across the triggers and you also have to swing this little monkey man across it. Being able to manipulate a PlayStation primate by just the flick of a wrist is amazing.
If you are trying to just get through the 4 game worlds you can beat this game in about 2 hours however if you’re trying to 100 percent this game and truly unlock all those PlayStation artifacts, get all the little goodies, collect coins and all the Easter eggs you’re looking at about 5 – 10 hours which I highly recommend. Astro’s Playroom might be targeted towards kids but I had a blast playing this game. Overall, the graphics are amazing, the soundtrack has absolute bangers on it, the core gameplay fully integrates all the new features of the PS5 DualSense however it is a little bit short but you can counteract that by saying the game is free.
The only negative I can think of is that some of the enemies are kind of repetitive and they needed to mix it up a little. The thing is that this game appeals to both casuals and hardcore gamers a like. If you have a PS5 you have to try out this game and in fact you don’t have to be a hardcore gamer, if you have a friend or family member come over who’s not big into video games you can show them this demo and they will probably enjoy it.
Astro’s Playroom perfectly showcases all the new features of the PS5 and the DualSense5 with a trip down memory lane in a fun but short platforming game.
