Hunters Arena Legends is a melee battle royale based on Asian mythology and it is available this month on PS Plus for both PS4 and PS5. It feels super different to any other battle royale games out there at the moment. In Hunters Arena Legends you choose a character and they have a set of abilities almost like a fighting game and you can go into either battle royale or tag battles.
Tag Battles work almost like a normal fighting game where it’s you versus another player without any upgrades and you just fight the best out of 3 rounds. This mode lets you get to grips with the fighting mechanics. The battle royale mode though is probably what you’re here for. You start the lobby on this big problem up in the sky and when the game starts all of the walls go down and you just jump down into the map below so you can kind of see where other players go and that’s a very cool spawn mechanic.
When you’ve dropped down onto the world there’s loads of AI monsters or little creatures and this bit works a bit like a MOBA. You need to kill them to level up and you can get gear to get more powerful and you can also fight other players now if you want to fight a player while they are weak. If you’ve leveled up pretty quickly you might be able to get some early kills and a bunch of XP that way.
There’s also loads of buffs you can find so you can pick up things that buff your health or your attack. There are also loads of random chests that you can loot for better gear. Just like a normal battle royale the circle stars closing in after a while and you need to fight off other players until you’re the last one standing. You can play Hunters Arena Legends solo or in trios at the moment. The thing that’s really cool about Hunters Arena Legends other than the fact it looks pretty gorgeous are that the characters are really interesting and so is the actual combat.
The combat in Hunters Arena Legends is super deep for a battle royale game and I really liked it. You have 2 different attacks, a normal attack and a magic attack which you can use and then you can dodge or parry as well to block incoming attacks. It all seems to work around combos where you can kind of lock an enemy into a combo and do a ton of damage. If you learn the combos really well you can do loads of damage.
There is a big skill gap, so you’ve got a chance to get much better at it. You can however break a combo using parries with a really well-timed block. You also have abilities and counter abilities and they are all very different. Some of them have massive ghost swords that come out and strike enemies with massive slashes. Others can summon daggers around them that fly around.
There are magic spells that can hone in on other players and there’s this one magic attack that fires out a purple bolt and it makes you completely stationary and vulnerable while you use it but it does so much damage and if you do it right you can actually kill someone in pretty much one hit which is insane. As you level up you actually unlock more abilities and you can end up getting an ultimate which will do tons of damage if you can land the attack and it gives you a cool little cutscene while you do it.
The combat is super fun and super rewarding and there’s a lot of strategy already in it where you can try and ambush someone or just take them head on or even wait for other players to get engaged and then try and attack them. When you’re in a fight with more than one person, do you gang up on the weakest one or do you try see what happens and then engage.
There’s loads of strategy and it feels so much fun and the battles seem so much more interesting than other battle royale’s where you are just shooting at things. If you’ve been knocked out and you’re spectating the last fight you get these epic fighting game moments that everyone can spectate and watch and it just looks so gorgeous.
Outside from the actual gameplay that they did very well is that there is crossplay between PlayStation and PC. Hunters Arena Legends feels super generous with the characters as you’ve got 12 characters for free and there are 5 characters that are locked that you have to pay for. You can however pay for them with in game currency that you earn by playing games so you don’t have to spend real money on it but them but it will take a while to unlock that amount of currency.
Another nice addition to Hunters Arena Legends is that there’s a ranked system, so if you’re one of those people that’s been annoyed at skill-based matchmaking in games like Warzone partly because you can’t see your rank. In Hunters Arena Legends there is a ranking system where you will get placed in a rank and shown what league you’re in and when you move up or down after matches which is how all ranked based games should work.
When I first saw Hunters Arena Legends, I thought it would be a bit janky and not that polished but I was completely wrong. It is an incredible game as it works really well and the controls are super responsive. I didn’t notice any lag affecting me and the movements are really fun. So if you are looking for a unique spin on the battle royale formula you should definitely try out this game.
Hunters Arena Legends takes on the battle royale formula and gives it its own unique spin with its melee focused combat. Battles feel fun and there's plenty of strategy involved. The characters are varied enough that you can feel a difference and its a great addition to the popular battle royale genre.
