Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is an Action RPG and is the remaster of the original PS3 game that was released in 2012. It is available this month on PS Plus. The story of Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is really interesting as you start the game as a dead guy and you end up in a pit with other failed experiments. Unlike them, this time the experiment was successful and you have been revived by gnomish scientists in the experimental Well of Souls but you lack fate.
Every person in this world has a fate and you as a fateless one have the opportunity to choose your own fate and not only that but you can change the fate of others around you too. When it comes to races, classes, and character creation in general in Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning you’ll be able to choose one of 4 available races. There are Humans, Nomadic Humans, Dark Elves, and Light Elves.
Each race has different racial bonuses like Alchemy, Lockpicking, etc., and has different specialties in weapons. When it comes to classes in Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning there are 3 classes you will be able to choose Might, Sorcery, and Finesse. Might represent warriors who rely on brute strength, heavy armor, and high defense to vanquish their enemies in battle. The warriors’ weapons of choice are the great sword, the long sword, and the hammer.
Might’s skills focus on increasing the strength and defense of the warrior by increasing your resilience, bringing you back from the brink of death, and giving your attacks a temporary bonus. Sorcery represents mages who fight primarily from a distance with a combination of magic and magical weaponry. Mage weapons are chakrams, scepters, and staves that strike from a distance and primarily deal elemental damage instead of physical damage.
Finesse represents Rogues who are fighters that rely on stealth and lightning-quick attacks to take out their opponents before they even realize they are under attack. This can mean stealthy kills with backstabbing, smoke bombs, traps sniping with longbows or simply attacking them with the incredibly fast daggers. Rogues can also specialize in the use of poisons for damage over time and weakening their targets.
What sets this game apart from most other RPGs is that as the game progresses and the fateless one gains more experience and levels you can combine skill trees together. This opens up the doors to various class combinations and adds 4 additional classes that combine the previous ones. They are Spellcloak which is a combination of Finesse/Sorcery, The Battlemage is a combination of Might/Sorcery, The Blademaster is a combination of Might/Finesse and The Universalist is a jack of all trades that combine all 3.
The world of Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is absolutely beautiful and has so many colors and is amazingly designed. Traveling and exploring is really enjoyable and satisfying and traveling on foot from point A to point B won’t be boring and monotonous most of the time. Graphically this game looks great, even the original game from 2012 looks really nice and the remaster is really awesome.
As I mentioned the world, characters and NPCs have lots of detail and animations and in case you didn’t like the story or this game’s setting you will definitely love its look. When it comes to the combat in Kingdoms of Amalur Re-reckoning I feel like the combat is definitely the strongest aspect of the game and the brutal finishers are amazing. Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning has one of the best combat systems on PS4 only beaten by Final Fantasy 7 Remake in my opinion.
The combat is so brutal, the animations are awesome and no matter which class you choose or which weapon you use you will definitely enjoy fighting every enemy. There are also Fate shifting powers that increase your attacks and slow down time when you are surrounded by multiple enemies and you can finish the last one off with a brutal finisher.
The main questline of the game is about 30 hours long but there are tons of side quests and the loot they drop is amazing and it’s really rewarding to explore the world of Amalur. THQ Nordic also announced an expansion for this game called The Fatesworn which will be released next year so look out for that. Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is one of the best Action RPG games out there and I will definitely recommend this game to anyone that enjoys fast-paced combat or Action RPGs in general.
Kingdoms of Amalur Re Reckoning will be available to PlayStation Plus members until Monday, December 6.
Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning has a very compelling narrative set in a gorgeous, colorful world. Its combat and class system are simple yet very fun and fascinating. The lore is also rich and adds to the overall world building but some of the quests are repetitive and even forgettable as well as a one-dimensional villain. Overall a very fun game to sink time into.
