Knockout City is a dodgeball-like online multiplayer game that was released in May of this year on EA Play and is available on PS Plus this month. It’s a pretty fun dodgeball game, has some great mechanics, graphically it looks a lot like Fortnite to me as it has that same graphical art style and there’s a lot of microtransactions for cosmetics. Graphically Knockout City ran smooth and I didn’t have any issues while playing the game.
Even though this game was just released on PS Plus as a free game it has been out for about half a year and we did play it when it first came out. The first 10 days that it was released it was free and we tried it back then and even though it was a brand-new release it was really smooth even back then. Everything has flat textures on it kind of like Fortnite did with some basic 3D models and some real basic geometric shapes on the levels.
The levels are mainly city-based so it’s a little futuristic, there’s a lot of neon lights, neon colors, and flying cars in the background but you’re mainly on top of buildings or by train tracks or other different parts of the level that you can then get thrown off completely. There are a couple of different game modes in Knockout City like Team KO 3V3 which is the first team to get 10 KO’s wins the round, best of 3.
Face-off is just a straight 1V1 and a best out of 3. Diamond Dash is almost like Kill Confirmed from Call of Duty where if you KO someone they drop Diamonds and the first team to collect 30 diamonds wins the match. KO Chaos is a 4-player free for all and the first player to 10 KO’s wins the round. Ball-Up brawl was the most fun where you literally have to ball your teammate up and throw it at people.
You don’t have regular balls in this mode you can pick up or the specialty balls as you have to use the other player as the ball and they can’t interact with anything while they’re picked up but you can charge them up and throw them like a regular ball. It makes for some interesting dynamics because you also lose health if the other person catches you and you can fully charge up where you can do an AOE throw where you go up into the air and you can smash the ball and knock the entire team out which is pretty cool.
The specialty balls are in the normal modes and you get a bomb ball, a cage ball where you can cage someone and just throw them off the side of the map. A moon ball where you have less gravity on you so you can do some high jumping moves and you fall slower. There’s also a multi-ball where you can throw 3 balls at once which is probably the strongest special ball. The sniper ball is also a fun ball to use as you can basically snipe someone from a distance.
The Soda ball is a lot like the bomb but doesn’t do any damage and instead lowers visibility. The noise the ball makes when it hits someone in the face is so satisfying. There are some announcers in Knockout City and most of them are over the top, you hear some footsteps and there’s not too much sound to it as it’s mainly about the balls and the different specialty balls making different noises.
The sound is nothing huge but the main focus is on the gameplay. The gameplay in Knockout City is satisfyingly fun, simple, it’s really easy to pick up and really easy to get into. You can get absolutely wrecked on some of these 3V3 if you’re stuck with a bad teammate or your opposition are basically pro players that know all the ins and outs of every map and special balls.
Knockout City is good clean fun and it has good short games so you can jump on anytime time even if you only have 15 min or so to burn. It is something you can get a lot of time into, and the one thing you’re going to notice is if you pick it up there’s a lot of microtransactions in here for cosmetics and they’re pushing that hard but you don’t have to buy anything as you unlock lots of extra cosmetics by just playing the game and doing daily challenges.
Knockout City also has a Brawl Pass and like most other games it has a free path and a premium path where you get 100 levels of rewards if you are interested in that. I’ll add that I don’t think I’d enjoy this game playing solo as much as I do playing with a group of friends because some of the dumb fun to it is the tension and screaming at your friends for missing a sniper shot with the ball or pass which adds a lot to the overall experience. I would definitely recommend Knockout City even if it wasn’t a free PS plus game.
Knockout City will be available to PlayStation Plus members until Monday, December 6.
Knockout City is a dodgeball online multiplayer game with lots of crazy modes and even crazier specialty balls that make the over-the-top gameplay exhilarating. Definitely, a fun game to sink a few hours into even if you have limited time.
