Marvel’s Avengers PS Plus Review

Marvel’s Avengers is an action RPG live service game set in the world of Marvel’s Avengers and is available to play for PS Plus Extra and Premium this month. You have the main story campaign which plot-wise I quite liked. Kamala Khan is the main protagonist of the campaign and her story and that of the other Avengers are quite engaging. After being blamed for a catastrophe, the Avengers reunite and rebel against AIM, the people who have blamed them and taken over the world.

The story is obviously still continuing with recent expansions and I do like the direction it is going but I have to say Hawkeye’s recent DLC was very disappointing but more on that later. Narratively, Marvel’s Avengers is pretty strong, but this game’s mission design is amazingly boring. You walk around boring environments beating up AIM soldiers and robots and then you would do a generic objective like defending a point, releasing prisoners from cages, protecting people, and capturing objectives.

Staggering in combat was a bit of a problem though as you would think that Hulk would be able to take a punch from a small robot without being staggered but he gets flung away as dramatically as the smaller characters. The number of enemies on screen was also a bit of a problem as not only does it make the framerate drop it makes the combat so frustrating. You have range flying enemies, normal range enemies, enemies that come up and punch you, shielded enemies, and everything you can think of.

You have so many attacks coming at you at once it’s impossible to dodge all of them and as you get staggered so easily one attack hitting you can lead to more hitting you and then you go down. Also, enemies don’t get staggered as much as there’s some weird stat that calculates it. If an enemy is mid-attack and I hit him as the Hulk he shouldn’t be taking it like I tickled him a bit and still hit me.

The turrets are another thing that felt too strong as they appear in every single battle and it feels like there are hundreds of them hitting you although there is an indicator that tells you when a ranged attack is coming half the time Marvel’s Avengers doesn’t bother informing you. Each character also has a parry and when you see the blue or yellow icon you are meant to use it but the timing felt off as it has to be somewhere in the middle of the animation to work.

With the combat being such a flurry of attacks coming your way with wild particle effects it’s hard to see them in the first place. It’s annoying because when the combat works and you’re fighting smaller groups it feels good and they could’ve easily killed 2 problems with one stone. Having fewer enemies on screen would help the frame rate and make the combat better. The boss fights are also quite average with no mechanical depth to them. They are just big damage sponges that hit like a truck.

You can experience all of this joy in co-op as well which is a better overall experience than playing it solo as you at least have someone else that can also take the pain with you. Although there were some problems as takedowns never seem to connect properly, sometimes the game refused to load and a lot of mission objectives bugged out.

The hub areas are also so badly laid out, especially the Heli Carrier. The skins you can buy and unlock in each character’s battle pass are pretty average and the best ones you unlock when finishing the main campaign but that might just be a personal taste. You can also pay real money to skip levels on the passes if you want to waste some money.

The recent Hawkeye expansion you can finish in a couple of hours and it just ends with no resolution. It makes it seem like you’re going to be fighting a new enemy called the Kree but they are nowhere to be found. You are just fighting AIM again and it’s exactly the same as the rest of Marvel’s Avengers but with a new character who has a lot of similarities to Kate Bishop.

Marvel’s Avengers is a nice-looking game and the campaign length is about 12 – 15 hours but it does suffer from some heavy frame rate drops that are not fun to play through. With the recent Jane Foster Thor release, the developers haven’t released a roadmap of where the game is going so this isn’t really a good sign but there is plenty of content and characters to try out.

Good

Combat and story has a lot of depth and each character feels different from the others creating a lot of variety. Fighting with multiple heroes can create a lot of chaos and playing through the framerate drops are not fun at all and some bugs and technical issues are either a minor problem or game-breaking.
