Mortal Kombat X PS Plus Review

Mortal Kombat X is a fighting game with a long history and is the sequel to the rebooted Mortal Kombat that was released in 2011. It is available this month on PS Plus. Mortal Kombat retold a lot of the classic stories throughout the tournament to ensure the survival of Earth Realm. The biggest thing I took away from Mortal Kombat X is just how much darker the storyline was and how much more brutal the combat is.

Instead of Shao Kahn being the big bad guy in this game we got Shinnok that was teased at the end of Mortal Kombat. Now Shinnok didn’t really have that much to do compared to Shao Kahn in this game but I like him more as a character because of his intuition as a villain and how much easier it is to beat him in a fight. Fighting Shinnok compared to Shao Kahn is like a night and day difference since Shinnok is a playable fighter and he plays within the rules of Mortal Kombat.

He isn’t a broken character until you get to his ultimate form which has corrupted Shinnok and makes him a lot more difficult and kind of like Shao Kahn status but still not up to that level. Another theme Mortal Kombat X was giving off was lineage, passing the torch so to speak to a new generation of fighters. With new additions such as Cassie Cage, Takeda, Kung Jin and Jacqui Briggs I really liked these new fighters and what they bring to the story.

Speaking of which I really enjoyed this newest chapter in Mortal Kombat as they did away with the 2 versus 1’s and they added in some quick time events which I thought was pretty cool. They also gave the female characters legitimate fight gear and not over sexualized them like most other fighting games. As I stated earlier the overall tone of Mortal Kombat X story is darker and grim. There is a 20-year jump in the story from the previous game that introduces the new generation and we discover what happened to other characters during that time as well.

While he was a playable character in Mortal Kombat, Kenshi is now an official character to this story with Takeda being his son that was trained under Scorpion. Kenji has always been 1 of my favorite Mortal Kombat characters so it was nice to see him included officially. I think it’s just crazy how much story is being told in between fights because at certain points it can just feel like you’re watching a movie and I really enjoyed that.

The gameplay is very solid as well with everything being pretty much the same as the last game however you can interact with the stage and throw projectiles at fighters or use a wall or stomp to create some distance. They did add this new feature that if performed at a correct way towards the end of a match you can kill your opponent without having to be asked to finish them which is referred to as a Brutality.

The X-rays return from Mortal Kombat and are just as brutal if not more than the last game. They work the same way as well as long as you fill up that bar, you can use it to either break away people’s combos or you can use it to perform that attack. The Fatalities are even crazier in Mortal Kombat X with how disgusting they can get. The biggest change up and I feel the best addition was adding fight variations, with each character in the game there are a total of 3 different fight styles for those fighters.

This can be a great way for each fighter to play differently and be a good way for each person who likes a certain favorite character to possibly always play differently and make sure that everybody’s not playing the same way when you’re playing them online or with a friend locally. My biggest gripe I probably have with Mortal Kombat X though is with its insane difficulty spikes mid matches. Now I don’t really experience this with regular matches but primarily in the story mode in the classic towers.

I get that the difficulty is meant to increase over time or if you haven’t died in a while but I think it’s insane that I can beat a fighter easily in the first round and then in the second round they are all of a sudden a pro player. It’s just so frustrating and it can take me out of it sometimes. The Krypt makes a return from the previous game and it’s just a little bit different. Graphically it looks a lot better and everything is a bit darker and creepier.

Mortal Kombat tried to give out these jump scares but it wasn’t too scary but in Mortal Kombat X it totally worked. I didn’t spend that much time in the Krypt only because the amount of jump scares can freak you out and you have this quick time event to make sure that you don’t get injured as you can come out of it alive and earn some rewards.

It’s just insane that you can walk down this hallway or this cave and all of a sudden, a giant spider comes out that’s just as big as you and honestly, I didn’t spend a lot of time in the Krypt to be honest. The roster for Mortal Kombat X is quite good with a lot of characters returning from Mortal Kombat and like I said with the addition of the new generational characters so to speak.

There’s also a lot of DLC characters compared to the previous game and you have characters like Jason Voorhees, Alien, Leatherface and you have Triborg which is a mixture of Smoke, Sektor and Cyrax. Rain also returns along with Tanya and Predator which I thought was a great addition because you get to have that classic fight with Alien versus Predator in a fighting game. I believe Mortal Kombat X is one of the best fighting games and I feel like if you are a fan of fighting games then you should definitely check it out as well.

Mortal Kombat X will be available to PlayStation Plus members until Monday, November 1.

Excellent

Mortal Kombat X has one of best fighting mechanics of any game in the series, awesome visuals and a story that most fans of the series will enjoy. Living towers also delivers a wide variety of challenges that sometimes can be a bit unfair but it's still very fun. There's also lots of DLC options available if you get bored with the base games roster.
