Nascar Heat 5 is the yearly Nascar game from developers 704Games and is the 2020 version of this racing game and it is available this month on PS NOW. Nascar Heat 5 is actually made on the unity engine and this is actually going to be the last Nascar game on the unity engine which means the next one will be on a different engine. There are a few modes you can play like an online mode, quick play where you can do daily challenges and a career mode where you have the option to make your own team.
I prefer to make my own team than join a team so that’s what I did. I’m not a NASCAR fan but I have watched a couple of races but I don’t actually know a lot about Nascar and what I didn’t know was that if you’re a good team and you’ve got the money then you can actually have up to 4 cars race from the same manufacturer. I was very interested in making my own team and this choice has been in the game series for a while now.
Unfortunately, I was really disappointed because although you can make your own team, there is no depth to it as you are one person with one car and you can’t hire another driver. You can buy new cars and in fact you can buy up to 5 or 6 different cars but you can only race one at a time and you can’t have any other drivers to race those cars with so, for me the career mode was lacking massively.
I don’t really know why they couldn’t put it in if they’re going to put in a mode where you’re making your own franchise and I really think that should’ve been flushed out a lot more. So, there’s not really much point into making your own team when you can just use an existing team and have 4 racers instead of 1 and earn more money from the races. When you make your own team however you get to hire and fire employees, manage your roster and you get to train them up and decide what you want each person to specialize in and I liked that aspect.
You can make friends and enemies with the other drivers as there’s a whole text-based system that you can discuss with other drivers after the matches. Unfortunately, in Career Mode there’s no commentary which is really weird as you get into the game and there’s no commentary whatsoever as it’s just you and your driver and the guy in your ear telling you how to navigate so I feel like that’s a big miss as well.
Not only that but I felt like Nascar Heat 5 is extremely repetitive in the Career Mode. I have to say though that this is a very challenging game and it took me 12 races to win my very first race and I really enjoyed the challenge part of Nascar Heat 5. You can turn the difficulty all the way up and you’re pretty much going to struggle to win any race at all so I decided to do that at the beginning and I had to turn it down again.
I really liked the competitiveness of this game and getting good qualifying times and driving well was very important if you want to place well. Multiplayer is nothing special but you have a split screen option which is always fun. The visuals and the cars look really good and all cars look unique and are easily recognizable. Nascar Heat 5 is a really fun game and it’s more of an arcade game and I did enjoy myself in short bursts.
Games like Wreckfest are slightly better but I really did enjoy Nascar Heat 5 especially as it was so difficult to win a race and when I did win a race it was a real accomplishment and it really felt like you earned it. You had to find a way up from the bottom and it was a real challenge to score the points that I had. I really enjoyed the time I played but I just felt like it was lacking in some major areas but if you are looking for a good racing experience and like games like Wreckfest or other arcade racers you will have a fun time with this game.
Nascar Heat 5 has been permanently added to the PS NOW library.

Nascar Heat 5 is a decent arcade racing game and you don't have to have any prior knowledge to Nascar races to enjoy this game for what it is. The career mode might be lacking but it is a fun challenging experience for any fan of arcade racers and it has local split screen which is always appreciated.
