Nier Automata is a hack and slash Action RPG and a sequel to the original Nier. It is available this month on PS NOW until November 1. This game takes place in a science fiction dystopian world where aliens come to earth and unleash an army of robots which almost wipes out humanity. The remaining survivors go to space in order to survive but there are still some humans remaining on earth and the humans create an android military division called the YoRHa which are tasked to take the earth back from the machines.
The YoRHa work for the humans and you take control of 2B and 9S which are the main characters of this game. Nier Automata has a lot of explosions, super great action and is just magnificent in so many ways. The story and world building are amazing but the way the story is told has some issues. The locations you visit in Nier Automata are actually amazing as they’re beautiful and you have great visual scenes like an amusement park or a castle that’s covered in vines.
Nature has taken over the whole planet and it’s just great to look at as it’s really diverse. Nier Automata is an open world game that really shines in so many ways, the quests are good and was pretty fun and I really enjoyed the characters 2B and 9S as they were really entertaining. 2B is like the stoic android who tries not to display emotions but it also makes for a lot of funny interactions with 9S and other characters.
The score was beautiful in so many ways especially during the fight scenes and when it’s calm the score is calm and beautiful and in the fight scenes where the action picks up the music gets superfast paced and you just feel that extra adrenaline from it. The gameplay in Nier Automata was pretty fun and I really enjoyed the fighting mechanics but I still had some criticisms like mainly it felt too easy especially in the middle of the game which is kind of funny because in the beginning there are no save points for like the first hour of the game.
It’s actually really hard in the beginning and when you die you lose half an hour or more of gameplay but it actually becomes really easy after that when you get a decent weapon. Hard difficulty on the other hand is way too hard or I was missing something as 2 hits killed me. So, there were some difficulty issues with this game as the spectrum between normal and hard was way too big. The enemies and bosses are great and I thought the bosses were super creative and super fun to fight and there were some bosses that had fleshed backstories behind them.
Nier Automata has an ending system which I didn’t really like as I don’t think it’s a great way to tell a story. The game has 26 endings and I had ending A which is the one you get at the end of the first gameplay playthrough. In order to get the other endings and enjoy the rest of the content of Nier Automata you have to repeat hours of gameplay to get a different ending to unlock different characters and to see their backstories and basically more content.
I think that’s a terrible way to tell a story and I don’t mind games that have like a good and bad path where you get certain endings but this is just overboard. I don’t think it’s a good way to tell your story by repeating the same thing over and over for hours on end but that’s just my opinion as I know there are people that enjoy that grind aspect. Honestly, I would play this game again in a years or 2’s time but I just don’t think it’s worth my time to play something that I already played and put in about 30 hours of gameplay.
I don’t think I missed out on much of the other content of the game you get by playing it again and I think I pretty much got the gist of the game and the characters so I’m just going to leave it at ending A. Overall I enjoyed this experience and honestly, I think Nier Automata is a great game but I just thought that the ending system was not so good but other than that the gameplay was fun, the story is absolutely great and the universe is outstanding. So, if you’re into JRPGs or combat based games I will definitely recommend this game.
Nier Automata is available on PS NOW until Monday, November 1, 2021.
