Ratchet and Clank Free to Play Review

Ratchet and Clank is free this month on PS4 and will be available until 31 March 2021. Ratchet and Clank was released back in 2016 and is a remake of the first game on PS2. The story starts off with Captain Qwark and the origin story of how Ratchet became a household name. In the story you will meet Clank the funny and intelligent little robot and become a galactic ranger and of course save the galaxy. It’s fun, it’s goofy and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The graphics of this game is just beautiful, the rendered levels, the amount of detail in each and every cartoony character’s face and even the color palette that was used is great. Each and every single area is different from the canyons of Veldin, to the rocky mountain town of Novalis and even the Galactic Rangers’ home base. Each and every single level is carefully crafted and has tons of detail that I absolutely love. The characters themselves all look great and even makes them look lovable to a certain degree.

The game is at its best when you are playing as Ratchet and you’re in combat with all these particle effects going on on screen and it looks phenomenal when you’re destroying your enemies and there’s parts of robots flying in the air and there’s bolts swarming all over the place and there’s just a huge amount of information being thrown at you. The voice acting is good as it matches the comedic tone of the game and it has a very good soundtrack as some of the music is very exhilarating while in combat.

The one little gripe I would have with the audio of Ratchet and Clank is that sometimes you can hear NPC’s repeating dialogue and it takes away from that immersion. The best part of the game is the game play as it is fun and addictive. It’s always been about destroying your enemies, platforming your way to glory, destroying bosses and at the same time making sure that your weapons are leveled up to the point of mastery. That is where the fun lies with the light RPG elements and leveling yourself up.

Not only do you get to level yourself up but you also get to unlock awesome equipment like gravity boots, grind boots and a lot of really cool equipment that you can use. You also have abilities that you can use and you can get mods for your guns. The more you progress the better equipment and abilities you will obtain and that’s the fun part. It’s not an extremely difficult game to play but it is a fun game to play and that’s where the gameplay makes it a lot of fun as the bosses have certain abilities and patterns to them which you need to figure out.

The light RPG elements of just grabbing your favorite weapon, levelling it up and making sure it’s as powerful as possible and then interacting with the world in mini games and completing the story is amazing. The story is about 10 hours long depending if you want to do some side content but it is a decent length for a platformer game. Ratchet and Clank does lack in certain areas mainly replayability as most areas are barren when you return to them so basically if you want to complete a certain side quest there won’t be any enemies there.

The collectibles aren’t as good as the other Ratchet and Clank games in my opinion but those are mostly for completionists. The previous trilogy also had more exploration than this Ratchet and Clank game and I’m not saying that this is a completely linear game but it is a lot more linear than previous games in the series. This iteration of Ratchet and Clank is also aimed more towards kids than the previous games which had young adult humor which was a lot funnier in my opinion. There’s also content that is missing from the original game because this is a remake that was eventually turned into a movie which was then turned into this game on the PlayStation 4.

Overall Ratchet and Clank is a fun game and is a great stepping stone for the sequel Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart which is being released in June. Leveling up these weapons and making sure that they’re super powerful, attaching mods to them and wrecking the enemies and bosses is absolutely awesome. If you like action platformers, third person shooters or games with light RPG elements, Ratchet and Clank is definitely the game for you and it is free to play until 31 March so you might as well try it out.

Available to play until 31 March 2021

Gameplay is amazing with lots of weapon variations and mods to equip. Graphically it looks stunning but some of the content from the original game was cut which is a bit disappointing but an overall amazing platformer.
