Rocket League Free to Play Review

Is this the best free to play game available right now? Let’s find out. Rocket League was a smash hit when it released back in 2015 for PS Plus and just about everyone gave it a shot. Recently it went free to play so let’s see what it’s about in 2020. It is basically hot wheels and soccer combined and that is the best way I can put it.

Pick your car, get a friend or two and go up against the computer or you can try either local or online multiplayer. Soccer is the name of the game. Whoever scores the most goals win. Pretty simple, right? Probably one of the first online multiplayer games that hold the moniker of easy to pick up and play but one of the hardest to master. Sure, it’s simple in concept. It is really simple. Put the ball in the goal, then you add rocket fuel or boost, aerials, off the wall shots and you get one chaotic game but get ready for the time of your life.

Cars range from the normal generic cars, real life cars and cars from popular games and movies. Of course, you get the meta cars that most people are using aka the Octane, Dominus and the Fennec to name a few. But my favorites are the video game and or movie reference cars. There’s Sweet Tooth’s ice cream truck from Twisted Metal. Then you have almost every Batman car you could possibly get. You get the tumbler from the Dark Knight Rises, Batman versus Superman’s actual car. And then you also get the Batman car from the original Batman movie. And finally, the time machine, also known as the DeLorean. Recently they added the Battle Bus from Fortnite but this one is a bit annoying with the random toot toots that happen in game. The game also has an extreme number of customizations.

In general, you have colors, decals, wheels, toppers, rocket boosts, antennas, goal explosions, trails and even engine sounds. They’ve thought about everything when they were designing this game. You could also get blueprints in the rocket pass. This will help you unlock more customizations. You also get different kinds of blueprints for cars and everything that I just mentioned. Now, do keep in mind you will have to spend a little bit of money if you want to unlock all these customizations.

They also have a time limited progression system that most free to play games have, which they call the Rocket Pass. There’s a free pass and a premium pass which is 10$. You can progress with every match you play or from weekly and season challenges which lets you unlock more customizations. If you get to tier 110 you basically get your money back which shouldn’t take a long time even if you only play 1 or 2 hours a day, which is great if you are looking for more customizations.

But the game just gives you so much content in general that you wouldn’t mind supporting this awesome game. You also have a bunch of game modes and this is where it really, really gets deep. You have 3v3, 2v2, 1v1 and 4v4. You also have ranked in each one of those modes except 4v4. On top of that, you have a rank in my favorite mode – rumble, which is basically 3v3 with powerups. We have super powers. That’s amazing.

Here is a list of powerups.

  • The Boot(Kicks an opponent’s car)
  • Disruptor(Forces your opponent to drive with constant boost)
  • Freezer(Freezes the ball in-place)
  • Grappling Hook(Pulls you toward the ball)
  • Haymaker(Punches the ball)
  • Magnetizer (Attracts the ball to your car)
  • Plunger (Grabs the ball with a plunger and cord)
  • Power Hitter(Allows you to hit everything harder and demolish opponents on contact)
  • Spike(Attach the ball to your car when you bump into it)
  • Swapper (Changes positions on the field with your opponent)
  • Tornado(Sweep up the ball and opposing cars into a giant funnel cloud)

Other fun modes include basketball, which they call Hoops, Dropshot, which is super cool. It’s just basically the ball landing in certain spots and whoever unlocks the floor first and lets the ball drop in wins, you need to have a certain amount of “flying” skill for this. And then finally, hockey. Yes, hockey. This is my least fun mode as the puck just struggles to go in most of the time. This game also boasts Cross Platform play, so you can even play with your friends on Xbox or PC. There are tons of content here and it has a very loyal fan base at any given day that I’ve logged on. There are almost always people playing this game and you rarely have to wait to get into your next game.

So, for those of you newcomers who are coming into the game, you have a bunch of people to play against. You will almost never be matched up with the same person unless you have a rematch. This game is just so well done. It is very hard to even find negatives in the game since it’s been out so long. It’s just such a great title and especially now since it went free to play this Fall, you no longer require a PlayStation Plus subscription which is amazing. The soundtrack to this game is fire. Feels like you are in a club with the music pounding in your headphones at full blast. I actively listen to some of these songs in my free time.

There’s only one con that I can think of and that’s the A.I. bots. The A.I. bots are so bad. After you become familiar with the game, they are completely useless and you will just walk all over them, like they barely hit the ball even on higher difficulties. Now I’d like to think they want to fix it but they have been the same since release in 2015.

In conclusion, rocket league is a spectacular game. It’s one of the more unique games you’ll ever find out there. There’s a reason why this has a spectacular fan base and why it is an E-Sports game, there’s a reason for everything. This game is awesome and it’s one of my favorite games in my library. It’s one of those games that I delete after a while. And then I want to have some fun and just re download it. Its one of those games you will always go back to.

It has a steep learning curve, but it also rewards you for the time you go from being ground game only to doing all these flips, aerials and wall shots in the air which is amazing once you pull some of these off. Psyonix has something amazing in this game that it has basically been the same game for 5 years and people are still playing it and hopefully more will play it now that it is free to play. I believe now that it’s free to play, everybody should play it. Everybody. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t play. Try it, learn it, have fun. Have an amazing time.

Excellent

Rocket League is amazing. I think it is easily one of the best games of the last decade and by far one of the best sports games in recent memory. Get a few friends or jump online with a few randoms, but you are bound to have some fun with it.
