Tekken 7 is a fighting game and is available this month on PS NOW. The Tekken series started back on PlayStation 1 and it even had a couple of spinoff titles throughout the year. Tekken 7 has a variety of game modes including online matches, arcade, treasure, versus battle and practice mode. It also has a deep customization mode and like most fighting games you can move back and forth but you can also sidestep unlike the Injustice games. Each face button is used for each limb.
Certain button combinations with directional buttons will unleash combos. Tekken 7 includes 24 levels along with 5 DLC levels. There’s a huge roster of 51 characters to choose from with 15 being DLC. This is a huge number of characters compared to other fighting games or even most Tekken games. You have 10 custom slots for each character which is more than enough to satisfy one’s creativity. The customization options are one of the highlights of the game even the hit effects can be changed.
Vivid colors, random items and different materials and textures make this one of the best customizations I’ve seen. Selecting an item barely takes any time to load which can’t be said about every game and entire outfits can be changed along with individual pieces. The story mode was quite average and expects you to have played previous entries to fully follow the story. They do include small cutscenes for each character just to give them a bit of backstory.
The gameplay completely makes up for the story as the movement is smooth, the graphics are alluring and every character has their own style being basic or flashy. I actually had no interest in some characters but when I played random, I was surprised how fun they could be. Load times are fairly tolerable even in online modes. The online community is still vibrant in 2021 which shows how well-made Tekken 7 is.
When your health is low enough you can deal higher damage and ultimately you can perform your ultimate called Rage art indicated by the flashing red around your health bar. When your enemy is in this state you have to play super careful because if there’s one wrong move it’s all over. Treasure battles is a great mode that rewards you with customization items, money and you can also raise your character rank.
Win 2 matches with the selected character and the loot is yours but if you lose your character rank can decrease. As your rank gets higher the AI enemies get more difficult but in return the rewards will be better. Promotion chances are opportunities for you to raise or lower the rank of a specific character and tend to be more difficult matches. All the loot is random and it might not even be for the character you are using.
There’s also 2 free DLC packs that you can download that give a lot of character artwork that can be used to further customize your profile. There’s some rage art and hit effects too. In the gallery mode you can watch all the cinematics from past games if you’re interested in the lore or want to know about past rivalries like Dragunov or Raven.
There are videos from a span of 9 games. There’s a lot of content packed into this game and a lot of the videos cost ingame currency to get but you will be raking in tons of cash if you’re doing Treasure battle. Every game series with multiple installments should have a gallery like this. Tekken 7 is a fun game as you can battle it out against your friends or the Online modes which is always fun. If you enjoyed previous entries in the Tekken series or fighting games in general you will definitely enjoy this game.
Tekken 7 is available on PS NOW until February 28, 2022.
A great fighting game with lots of unique fighting styles and a wide variety of characters. The battles are fun and every fight feels unique. The Treasure battles offer a lot of rewards while training against AI. The online modes are fun and I didn't experience any latency issues. Story mode is fairly average but the gameplay more than makes up for it.
