Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep PS Plus Review

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep is part of the Borderlands series which are First Person Looter Shooter RPGs that started in 2009 and is available this month on PS Plus. You start the game by picking a character with a unique action skill who will level up and get stronger as you kill enemies and complete missions. The map itself isn’t really an open world it’s more of a zoned-off world separated by a fast travel system and loading screens although some areas are more open than others and most of them are quite linear.

Within these areas you’ll be following the main mission and picking up side missions as you progress, killing enemies, and completing missions grant you XP that will level up your character. When this happens, you’ll be given skill points to spend on multiple skill trees so you can build a character that suits your playstyle. The main draw of these games has arguably always been its gear and loot. The games are known to feature an almost unlimited combination of weapons both visually and statistically.

Weapons are made from a pool of parts from various in-game fictional brands and these brands will have their own theme and style. When the game drops a weapon, it randomly generates it for you. You’ll also find grenade mods, class mods, artifacts, and shields which again all have randomized looks and properties. Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep actually started life as the fourth DLC expansion for Borderlands 2 and it was a relatively large story-based DLC. It is widely considered to be 1 of the best Borderlands expansions.

The developers have adapted that DLC into a small standalone game with some tweaks and rebalanced a few things. It serves as a prequel to the upcoming game Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands which releases in March. Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep centers around you playing a session of the Borderlands equivalent of Dungeons and Dragons which here is called Bunkers and Badasses. Throughout the game, Tina will chime in and change some stuff on the fly or have you rolling dice to determine some outcomes.

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep is almost identical to the original version with only a few minor changes for example in this game your character starts off at level 1 and everything scales accordingly unlike the original where you had to reach a certain level to access it. It does come with a fresh set of trophies if you are into that kind of thing otherwise there really isn’t much of a reason to jump back into it if you have played it before however if you saw the reveal of the 2022 Wonderlands games and you felt intrigued this isn’t a bad place to start.

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep gives you a solid 15 to 20 hours of content depending on how much of a completionist you are. If you’ve never played a Borderlands game and you haven’t even heard about this game then I would say the standalone game may be a good way to get into the series. The game engine has moved on significantly since Borderlands 2 and still plays fine but Borderlands 3 just plays and handles so much better at least in my opinion.

The graphics, visual style, and humor of the Borderlands series can be somewhat divisive but I personally love the art style and the cell-shaded or comic book style has always appealed to me but I do know some people who wouldn’t try this game purely based on its looks. The humor is kind of hit and miss but mostly hit for me but it kind of depends on you personally. One thing I really wanted to add on here is that if you do decide to play Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep make sure you go into the settings and check the controller layout.

For some reason, the game defaults to a control scheme where L1 is aim and R1 is shoot instead of it being the triggers. I think Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep is a great slice of the overall Borderlands cake even though the series is very popular it definitely isn’t going to please everyone but for me, I love the looting, the shooting, the characters, and the world quite a lot. Ultimately if you’ve already played this previously you simply don’t need to pick this up unless of course you just want to or you’d like to refresh your memory before Wonderlands releases. However, if you’re new to Borderlands completely then I’d definitely recommend this game.

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure will be available to PlayStation Plus members until Monday, February 28.

Great

Tiny Tina’s Assault On Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure doesn’t change much from the game’s original release but it doesn't really need to as this was one of the best DLC for Borderlands 2. This version is a blast to play even if you have played it before just to recap on the events of this prequel before Wonderlands releases.
