Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt is a free-to-play battle royale third-person shooter based on the World of Darkness series. This game is perhaps the most unlikely Battle Royale to ever exist and I’m sure there are more extreme examples I haven’t played but who could have ever predicted this superpower vampire-themed Battle Royale and what’s more it’s actually incredibly fun. I haven’t played any other games in the series or know the lore that is involved but from what I’ve been able to gather there are various factions of vampires at war with each other.
You have to take to the streets of Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic to battle it out to the bloody death. There are little bits of lore you can collect as you play the game whether you’re doing a side quest for an NPC at the hub or by discovering the location with the in-game map itself but this isn’t really a story-based game. I think it’ll add a little bit of extra depth to the overall world if you’re already a fan but for newcomers, you’re really only here for the gameplay.
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt features solo, duo, and trio battle royale matches where you select from a range of 8 character classes to play as. Each class shares some similarities while having unique differences as well. Just for example the Brute and the Vandal are both from the same clan so they share a really fun leap ability however the Brute is unique in that it can deflect bullets with the shield while the Vandal has a stunning ground slam ability making them a more up close and personal brawler.
Mixing and matching different character combos similar to games like Apex Legends can make or break the outcome of battle leading to dynamic and fluid engagements throughout the match. More than most battle royales something that really stands out to me about the gameplay here is the freedom of movement. Most characters have an ability that lets them move faster on the map while you take to the streets on foot or the rooftops towering above Prague. You can also run up walls or across the edge of them Prince of Persia style regardless of which archetype class you choose.
This gives Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt a heightened sense of verticality that you really don’t see too often. Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt is also extremely user-friendly which makes this an easy game to jump in and out of with friends. Having no barrier to entry with cost being free to play is a great start but it’s also just incredibly easy to learn whether you go through the 3-minute tutorial or just learn along the way. This game is a perfect example of easy-to-learn hard to master.
In Solo games, you are given extra lives to play with and in team games, you can revive teammates without having to grab a badge or a dog tag off their body or anything. In my personal experience, this gave my less skilled teammates something that they could still do to help the team for example if I went down in a fight my partner could run away and easily revive me getting us right back in the action. The incoming gas clouds are also user-friendly in a kind of unique way even though they’re one of the more devastating map shrinkers I’ve ever experienced.
Because the gas is so strong it’s easier to predict where people are going to be and you can even use the border as a weapon at times. In games like Apex or Warzone, the gas is almost trivialized at times due to extra abilities, healing, gas masks, and things like that and you could still easily be attacked from anywhere which to me personally isn’t as much fun. Adding to the accessibility I will even say looting is incredibly simple as you have a pretty basic system of green, blue, purple, and orange as you find guns around the map.
You don’t have to find attachments or even manage throwables, it’s all really just about optimizing your abilities in combat while doing your best to hit shots. One last thing I really love about Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt is that melee is actually a viable form of combat. You hold 2 guns and a melee weapon but during close-quarters battles especially during the end game melee weapons reign supreme adding to the vampire fantasy while simultaneously feeling more in control of the outcome. This is an easy game for me to recommend and the micro transactions aren’t even egregious.
There is a battle pass and a storefront for skins, the kind of thing you could expect in any free-to-play battle royale but it’s never in your face or super annoying. Also, nothing you can buy will ever give you an advantage either as everyone has access to the same skills, characters, and weapons. Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt is currently in Season 1 and Season 2 is on the horizon which is great for longevity. My only criticism of the game so far is that there’s only one map. I am still having a ton of fun but I could see how this game could get stale fast.
The map isn’t enormous and with there only being one all draped within the same dark aesthetic, fans will be demanding more faster than normal. Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt does what it can to spice things up such as adding classes, cosmetics, a ranked system, and modifiers during solo games but that doesn’t fix the root cause of my problem which is map variety. Adding a few more maps to Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt could seriously make it stick around for years to come. If you’re a fan of vampires, battle royales, or both then diving into Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt is a must-play.
