Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is an arcade fighting game from Sega and is one of June’s PS Plus games. This game is basically a remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown which was a PS3 title. When Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown was announced I was hoping that there would be a story mode added or at least some cutscenes for each of the characters arcade endings but unfortunately, we didn’t get any of that which is really a shame and a wasted opportunity.
The graphics are lot more polished than Final Showdown and Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown looks like a PS4 game. The textures, the lighting and the colors are all of course much better and more realistic than in Final Showdown and personally I love how this game looks but I have to say that it’s not on the same level as Mortal Kombat in terms of graphics.
There are certain parts where you can tell that it’s a remaster of the same character models and levels like when the clothes phase into the body or when the characters phase into each other just like in Final Showdown. One thing that’s been added is Tekken’s style of fireworks when your hits land and it’s a cool detail. Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown has added brand new tracks for each of the stages and menu screens which sound amazing.
The compositions are a blend of techno drum and base, metal and oriental folk music. Overall, I’d say that the presentation of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is really impressive and the gameplay is exactly the same as in the previous installments. You can do combos, throws, signature moves, kick your opponent out of the ring and perform special throws against a wall or a fence.
Nothing has changed which is good because I think the gameplay in Final Showdown was already perfect so I’m happy that it’s been kept as it was. As expected for modes you get the classic Arcade Mode where you fight a series of opponents until you beat Akira Yuki and eventually Dural who has a new stage in this game.
You can also play the two-player mode with your friends or play online. Along with ranked matches you also get Room Match. Here you can enter a room of several online players as either a spectator watching others fight or as an actual participant. You can also create your own room with your own specifications and terms for the rounds. As always you can’t have a fighting game without a practice mode.
Here you can sharpen your moves to perfection and be better prepared for the try hards in online matches. Overall Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown has a really fun and solid gameplay and is one of the most technical in fighting games. There is a legendary pack DLC that costs about $10 but I’m not really sure if it’s worth it as we only get half of the customization items that we had in Final Showdown which is a letdown.
The pack includes polygonal skins for all the characters and a retro stage from the first Virtua Fighter game which is really cool. With Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown being an update to Final Showdown I actually expected a lot more in the customization department. I really wanted them to at least give me the option to choose whatever color I want from a full palette like in the Tekken games.
Overall Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is a great fighting game and the graphics, music and gameplay are great and this updated version for the PS4 is a good addition but Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown feels incomplete without any story representation.
I get that their selling point is the classic arcade feeling but fighting games like Mortal Kombat give you that classic arcade feeling too and so much more so they could have at least added something story wise. Otherwise, it is a very fun fighting game that any fighting fans will definitely enjoy as the network code is solid.
Ultimate Showdown's visuals are gorgeous and it also adds a lot of technical gameplay to the game which is great for the competitive type. The lack of single player or arcade mode endings are a bit of a let down but the online mode is decent at launch which is not always the case in other fighting games.
